This work applies resources from linguistic criticism and speech-act theory to explain the structure and persuasive power of the Gospel of Mark. In the process, the Gospel is outlined according to its frames of communication, linguisic markers, and several types of speech-acts. Included is a discussion of the function of the “messianic secret” in the context of the Gospel’s governing speech-act. According to the author, Mark is a speech-act that makes both assertions about Jesus and claims upon the reader. Cook’s work represents an accessible introduction to how linguistic criticism can be utilized to analyze and interpret biblical texts.
