This volume examines the scholarship and personal life of Erwin Ramsdell Goodenough, an American scholar best known for his studies in Hellenism and Hellenistic Judaism. From 1923 to his retirement in 1962, Professor Goodenough taught and did research in the history of religion, producing the massive thirteen-volume work Jewish Symbols in the Greco-Roman World. Goodenough argued that there was, in the ancient world, a lingua franca composed of symbols that were employed by many different religions to convey the “same” message. Eccles’s work serves both as a valuable introduction and resource for students new to Goodenough and a thoughtful review and analysis for those who know it well.
