This text-critical commentary seeks to reconstruct from the preserved ancient manuscripts the most primitive wording of the Greek text of Mark. Volume 2 focuses on Mark 10–16. For each verse, the commentary identifies units of text where the manuscripts of Mark disagree in wording and lists these variations with supporting manuscripts. Each variant is then evaluated in order to determine not only which is probably the most primitive wording but also how and why the other variants developed. Appendixes discuss the ending of Mark, Markan features of style, the influence of Latin translation on the manuscripts of Mark, poorly attested readings in Mark that may be primitive, and a critique of the theory of Westcott and Hort. The volume concludes with a new reconstruction of the Greek text of Mark, based on the decisions reached in the commentary.

Delbert Burkett is the Jaak Seynaeve Professor of Religious Studies at Louisiana State University. He has written or edited numerous books and articles on topics relating to the New Testament, including An Introduction to the New Testament and the Origins of Christianity (Cambridge University Press).
